Career and Leadership Development Grant

Are you a working woman seeking to enhance and improve your career? Are you a graduate student or early career academic looking to share your research with colleagues at conferences?

If the high cost of conferences, meetings, seminars and certifications are holding you back from advancing in your industry, apply for an AAUW Honolulu Career and Leadership Development Grant!

We offer multiple grants (up to $4,000 for each grant), each application cycle. Successful applicants will also be awarded a complimentary one-year membership to AAUW Honolulu.

Grant funds can be used for:

  • Costs associated with pursuing career-related designations (e.g. prep courses, exams)
  • Trade certifications and licensing
  • Conference registration fees (and professional memberships, if required for conference)
  • Airfare and other transportation costs (e.g. airport shuttles)
  • Hotel/accommodation costs
  • Per diem

COVID-19 UPDATE: Grant funds can be used to help pay fees and registration for virtual conferences and other professional development activities.

Who is eligible to apply?
Women who are employed or were recently employed, or who are current graduate students. Applicants must be living and/or working/studying in the State of Hawai‘i.

If you are currently attending a Hawai‘i-based university online but are living on the US mainland due to COVID, you are still eligible to apply.

Applications can be submitted up to 9 months prior to the proposed activity.

What’s the application deadline?
October 15th and April 15th of each year.

How will applications be evaluated?
Applications will be evaluated based on proposed activity’s likelihood to:

  • Further the applicant’s career goals
  • Make a positive impact on the applicant’s community (however defined by the applicant)
  • Help advance AAUW’s mission

The strength of the letter of recommendation will also be taken into consideration.

What does an application include?
Applications can be submitted through the AAUW Honolulu website using the form below. All documents must be submitted as PDFs.

A complete application includes:

  • A completed application form (i.e., the form below)
  • One letter of reference, submitted directly to the Engagement Team from your reference (Instructions for reference writers can be found here)
    • Please note: Applicants are responsible for contacting references and informing them about application deadlines.
  • A one-page cover letter that details the following:
    • The proposed activity and how the proposed activity will affect your professional development and career plans
      • COVID-19 UPDATE: If you are proposing an activity (e.g. conference travel to the mainland) that may be interrupted due to the ongoing pandemic, please include a few sentences that describe a back-up plan for how you would use award funds in the event of an activity cancellation (e.g. attending the online/virtual conference instead).
    • How the proposed activity will impact the applicant’s community
      • This can be the applicant’s scholarly community, workplace community, personal community, or any other notion of community, but please specifY
    • How the proposed activity (or activity outcomes) will help to advance AAUW’s mission
    • Any extenuating circumstances or needs that you would like considered
  • A copy of your resume or CV
  • An itemized budget detailing estimated activity cost
  • Proof of acceptance of presentation/paper (for academic conferences)
