Wrapup of the Women’s Voter’s Workshop

aauw-voteNow more than ever, it’s important to have women’s voices heard.

AAUW Honolulu, in conjunction with the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women, Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii, Hawaii Women in Film Making and AF3IRM, hosted a voter’s workshop.

Speakers included Catherine Betts, from the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women, State Representative Della Au Belatti, Laurie Field, Hawaii legislative director and public affairs manager for Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii and Keanu Young, assistant director at the legislative reference bureau public access room.

Young opened the workshop by explaining the procedure involved in a bill becoming a law under the state’s constitution, as well as resources that are available at the Capitol’s Public Access Room and online.

Betts, Au BelattiĀ and Field spoke in a panel discussion about legislation that affected women and how larger federal issues come into play at the state level.

Field ended the day by sharing how to write and give effective testimony as well as tips from her own experience with Planned Parenthood and the ACLU.
